Parma is the music city par excellence, a land of strong but refined passions. It is the land of Verdi and Toscanini, of Pizzetti and Paer, of Tebaldi and Bergonzi. Opera music, celebrated in the awesome Regio Theatre, re-lives in the many Verdi haunts, which are authentic sanctuaries dedicated to the cult of the composer from Busseto. In 1600, the largest covered theatre in the world, the Farnese Theatre, was built in Parma and it was the first with mobile sets. In 1800 Maria Luigia had the Regio Theatre built as a sort of precious "block of flats" where every respectable family had its own box. The Boito Conservatory, the house in which Toscanini was born and the House of Music in Parma, and Roncole, Busseto and Sant'Agata in the Lowlands are unavoidable stops of a "full immersion" in the history of music. The opera seasons of Parma and Busseto, the Verdi Festival, the music evenings in the historic squares, the cloisters, the parks and the castles constitute an offer that has given Parma the title of "music capital".
